Welcome to First Grade !
Welcome to My First Grade Classroom!
Hi my name is Mrs. Johnson and I have the pleasure of teaching first graders. It is my favorite age group to teach. You will watch how your child grows both socially and academically this particular year. Students will not only learn how to be proficient in reading but they will also learn how to take a closer look at different kinds of texts. First graders will explore character traits, predictions, and make inferences/ connections based on texts. In addition, students will be able to explain how the author or illustrator shows what a character is thinking and feeling.
This year students will also turn into writers. In the beginning of the year, we will focus on our writing stamina and goals. We chart to see how long we can write during writers workshop. Through a mini lessons, students will learn how to write personal narrative stories, how to's, opinion letters/books and small moment stories. To finish the year students will do research and write a nonfiction book.
First graders also have the opportunity to learn different math concepts. We continue to do addition and subtraction, however we learn how to use different strategies to solve problems. At this level, students need to apply basic math skills in order to solve word problems and higher thinking mathematical concepts. Throughout the year,we learn place value, time, use of the 120 chart, and geometry. We also expose students to money during our morning meeting.
This is a busy learning year! Students amaze me of how much they grow and learn. I always look forward to each year since I grow as teacher from each one of my students.
